How to behave in Milonga
Codigos de la Milonga
We remind you of some habits practiced in the
Milongas Porteñas:
Dear friends, in more than a century of history, in the Argentinean Milongas consolidated some behavioural rules which help dancers to optimize their own dance and amusement.
Sice several years our association promotes the most authentic Argentinean Tango. Therefore we would also like to recreate as much as possible the atmosphere that you could sense during the most traditional Milongas of Buenos Aires. First of all, to do that we need the help of you-all.
After proposing the music divided in Tandas and Cortinas, we arranged the table so to make possible the Cabeceo.
It’s convenient to give attention to others and to one’s own dance prefering the Milonguero style. This style is practiced in the Milongas of Buenos Aires while the so-called “tango nuevo” or “tango figurato” are styles used to dance with more recent music, which isn’t part of the music repertory usually danced during a Milonga (Piazzola, Electrotango, etc).
1. follow the ronda, which is anti-clockwise, without to create a blockage;
2. who doesn’t feel sure should remain inside the dance floor;
3. avoid to surpass on the right and to step backwards;
4. dance al piso, trying to avoid acrobatic figures, high boleos and hills in the air;
5. don’t try new dance steps on the dance floor;
6. always protect the female dancer;
7. finish the Tanda with the same dancer: the cortina is useful to escort the dancer to the table and to permit her to accept a new invitation from another person;
8. avoid to invite a dancer taking him/her by the arm;
9. dance keeping an own “dance line”, avoiding to go crosswise;
10. avoid stopping for “to explain” a footstep while dancing inside the ronda;
